“This is the duty of our generation as we enter the twenty-first century ─ solidarity with the weak, the persecuted, the lonely, the sick and those in despair. It is expressed by the desire to give a noble and humanizing meaning to a community in which all members will define themselves not by their own identity but by that of others.” ─ Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate

CREATING A CIVIL COMMUNITY
“Civil society” has become a central theme in contemporary thought and is increasingly used to suggest how public life should function. The literature suggests that three principles — participatory engagement, constitutional authority and moral responsibility — are found in all civil societies. Characteristics of a civil society include:
Equity: Members are given equitable access to and use of resources for constructing a satisfying life, including expanding and strengthening economic conditions for community members, especially the poor.
Reciprocity: Members pursue social transformation through reciprocal, mutually dependent collaboration with others, and negotiate and resolve conflict through peaceful, nonviolent means.
Distilling the broad theme of civil society to a local, community level, this year’s ILAD will honor those whose personal and professional lives have been dedicated to making ours a more civil community through their dedication to equity and a life of reciprocity.
Please join us in celebrating our honorees.
